BioInformatician/Computation Biologist

Reports to:
Director of Scientific Informatics

Position Overview:
The Scientific Informatics group develops bioinformatics software to support instrument and scientific application development. This software will seed Helicos’ Open Source Project and is used by internal developers to monitor and adjust instrument and application parameters. The group consists of a mixture of biologists, computer scientists, and mathematicians, and this multidisciplinary environment reflects the larger Helicos culture. Teamwork, responsibility, and the desire to create high quality scientific inference solutions are critical for success in the group. This is a technical position and the candidate will be expected to write applications and develop tools for analysis of DNA sequencing based applications.

Primary Responsibilities:
•Responsible for application support with an emphasis on data exploration, experimental planning, and experiment trouble shooting in collaboration with biologists, engineers, and other bioinformatics experts.
•Play a major role in the day-to-day analysis and interpretation of extremely large and complex data sets and develop tools which allow others to analyze these data sets.

Qualifications
•Experience validating algorithm performance via simulations within the genomic or biological problem space considered a strong plus.
•Strong biology background or extended work experience in collaboration with biologists considered a strong plus.
•The ideal candidate would have some familiarity with the genomic structure, genome/genome comparisons, population genomics and modern biology.
•Exercise independent judgment within broadly defined fields to develop methods, techniques, and tools to obtain results. The candidate is expected to have expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.
•Experience working with population genetics, genome structure, and/or medical genomics
•Experience with genomic data analysis and annotation
•Working knowledge of statistical methods for assessing sequencing methods – preferably methods employed at a genome center for assess sample preparation biases and purity
•Experience assessing resulting alignment quality
•Visualization and web site development experience within bioinformatics
•Experience working with Linux clusters
•BS/MS in Computer Science/Software Engineering/Genetics; 5+ years
•Perl and C++ experience
•The ability and desire to specify the overall function of the system based on prior knowledge of genomic complexity
